How Teachers Can Keep Early Finishing Students Engaged

As a former kindergarten teacher I would like to share a little secret to keep students busy when they have completed their work/project, and others are still working. This will work for most elementary school classrooms K through 5.

We have all heard those words "I'm finished" while you are still trying to assist other students. What to do? Create what I call a Busy Bag. They are sewn bags that fit over the back of your students' seat and they are filled with relative and enriching materials to keep your student busy while others are finishing up. The great part is that each bag can be customized to each student providing the necessary differentiated instruction required.

So if you have a student who has a favorite book, word search, math sheet (practice addition/subtraction skills for example), word puzzles, or anything else relevant include the materials in the busy bag. The Busy Bag also eliminates your student from having to get up out of his/her seat. The Busy Bag also eliminates the need for your student to ask what do I do when I'm done, they will know what is expected.

To make the busy bag you must measure the width of you chairs and add a quarter of an inch on either side for your seam allowance. The fabric bought should be at approximately 54 inches wide. Fold the material length wise by folding a third in the center and overlapping the other third the opposite direction (like a wrap). Cut the material the desired width of your chairs and sew up each side. Turn the material right side out; slip the covers on the backs of your students' chairs and your done.
